Welsh Dragon Tattoo
08/06/09 03:54:21PM, by Chad Davis
I'm thinking about having a Welsh Dragon tattooed on my arm. I've never had a tat before and this is one of those 'I'm turn 40 and I'm fighting it' type of things. Anyway, I want to put it on my right arm and the artist tells me that the dragon should be facing forward. This would require him to flip the image from the way it is usually displayed. My question is, by 'flipping' the dragon does this present any negative cultural implication? Having never visited Wales (yet) I don't want to do...
Dreamin' of a Welsh Christmas....
10/24/08 10:28:08PM, by gaabi
And, if you're Welsh, do you do Christmas and what do you do?Ceri said that also wasn't much of a bid deal for his family. My family didn't do much for it, some years we just had pizza and went out to the Chinese movies, other years we had presents and even a live tree we planted in our front yard. Today I make a big deal of this with my kids, of decorating the house, getting a tree and letting them decorate it, making presents for relatives and cookies for friends and neighbors, driving...
"Colorful" Welsh-Americans
01/19/09 06:57:20PM, by gaabi
American history is full of hard-working, innovative and brave Welsh Americans but my favorites are the more "interesting" Welsh Americans. People have talked about John Rhys, who was present at the Newport Chartist uprising and may have fired shots and who was later in Texas reselling (several times) the land grant he received for his part in the Texas Revolution, but he was by no means alone in our history. Here in Oregon we have the story of Ellis Hughes and the Willamette Meteorite . The...
Welsh fortune-tellers
04/05/11 11:07:14AM, by Gaynor Madoc Leonard
I'm reading Giles Tremlett's biography of Catherine of Aragon at the moment in which he states the following (when she went to join Prince Arthur, her then husband, at Ludlow Castle, where he oversaw the Welsh Marches):"If Catherine knew anything at all about the Welsh before she arrived in Ludlow, it would have been what Ayala had written to her parents a few years before she set sail. He warned that the Welsh were renowned fortune-tellers. He drew comparisons with Spain's own, supposedly...
Welsh soul food
05/29/11 02:44:33PM, by m.c. chuka
I'm really new to exploring the culture of my Welsh (or is it more appropriate to say Cymru?) ancestors. My husband, who is Italian and Cuban, has a familial history of incredible recipes. I'm wondering what kind of cuisine the Welsh consider comfort food? Hopefully it's something I can try to make at home from ingredients I can find in Florida.

03/20/10 02:34:14PM, by Vicky Loving
I have been attending a Welsh class that I found on Meetup.Com and we just did our first session on Skype. It was amazing! I'd never used it before but it almost as good as being there in person. I am encouraging everyone interested to join us. Look for Dysgu Cymraeg on Meetup.com, you might have to look in the Philadelphia area, not sure. Any problems please contact me and I will help. Hope to see some of you there!!! Here's a link:...
Welsh boat names
12/30/10 02:07:04AM, by Gregg Watts
I purchased a wooden kayak and would like to personalize it with a name and possibly some inlay. It's a Pygmy Kayak Arctic Tern and glancing in my dictionary I found ysgraell gogledd and ysgraen gogledd as possibilities. I have the gogledd down, but how on god's green valley do you pronounce ysgraen or ysgraell? And what is the difference? Masculine/feminine? Singular/plural? I thought playing off the image of the tern might have great possibilities for some Celtic knotwork as an inlay in the...

Hello all,The World Lacrosse Championships, held every four years, will take place in July in Manchester, England. The Wales Senior Men's team will be one of 30 nations competing in what will be the largest lacrosse event in history. The Welsh Lacrosse Association (WLA) receives little funding from government or sports governing agencies. As a result, eachplayer has been required to pay a minimum of 1,000 GBP in order to cover their partifipation in this historic event. However, funding is...
Welsh pubs in NYC
09/07/10 03:56:57PM, by Gregg Watts
We'll be heading back to visit family in New York later this month and wondered if anybody had any good recommendations for a Welsh pint or bite to eat in any of the boroughs.
The Welsh Highland Railway
02/09/11 12:55:42PM, by Gaynor Madoc Leonard
Anyone visiting Wales this year might like to add the Welsh Highland Railway to their itinerary. It's a 25 mile journey from Caernarfon via Beddgelert (readers of The Carmarthen Underground might glimpse the tea plantations there!). Eventually, it will terminate at Porthmadog but even without that it promises to be a spectacular journey. Information can be found on the Festrail website.
